4 Oral Care Tips During Pregnancy

While you are celebrating your pregnancy, lots of things are also happening to your body. Congratulations! You’ve got a bun in the oven. However, it might come unnoticed but it might be easy to neglect your teeth since you are more occupied on something else during pregnancy. The thing is oral care is as important as taking in folic acid.

Here are your oral care to-dos:

1. Regular Dental Check Ups

If you are not yet doing this, set an appointment right away. Pregnancy causes women to become more prone to gingivitis and bleeding gums due to hormones and your dentist might require you to have more frequent cleanings or medications if necessary. Periodontitis could put you at risk for premature birth, preeclampsia (high blood pressure in pregnant women) and gestational diabetes so make sure oral care is part of your pregnancy preps.

2. Have A Nutrient-Packed Diet

Losing teeth when you are pregnant is something you should not worry about just as long as you are healthy. You will need doses of calcium, vitamin A, C, D, protein and phosphorus and also added fruits and vegetables, calcium-rich foods like yogurt and cheese should be added in your diet. Your snack should not contain high sugar levels or else your baby and you will be at risk for diabetes.

3. Stick With Your Dental Routine

Dental and oral care should not at the bottom of your list. Daily flossing is essential as well and regular brushing is a must. Your dentist might also prescribe an antibacterial mouthwash if needed. Also, make sure to rinse your mouth with water or water with baking soda if you have morning sickness or frequently vomit to prevent acid from sticking and destroying your teeth.

4. Use Safe Dental Products

Always read the labels of your dental care products. Organic products are better when you are pregnant since they do not contain harmful chemicals that can affect your baby. Do not use products with chemicals like parabens, SLS and SLES, saccharin, and triclosan. High levels of fluoride may be very harmful as well.
