As soon as cold November kicks in, you’ll start to notice how the cold weather makes your skin dry and scaly. You realize how much you need to swap your bath products to creams that can moisturize your skin more. But have you also realized that as much as it affects you, it’s also affecting your baby’s skin?
Here are some tips to help you make sure your baby’s delicate skin is able to go through the weather.
Bathe Less
Contrary to what it looks, water can actually dry up the skin. Water tends to wash off the skin’s natural oils most especially when using a warm or hot water bath. Your baby’s skin will not get very sweaty or sticky due to cold weather so bathing can actually be reduced. Ensure that your baby’s diaper area is always clean even if you’re not bathing every day by using wet wipes or cotton ball and freshwater. You may also want to add a few drops of baby oil in the water so the skin is hydrated and moisturized.
Moisturize Immediately After Bath
Often times we dry our baby’s skin completely after bathing them. However, it is recommended that a moisturizer is applied to help lock the natural moisture of your baby’s delicate skin. Your baby’s wash and clean routine should always include an all body moisturizing regimen. If your baby is not that fond of oil massages, use a gentle massage for your moisturizing time. Gentle massage over knees, legs and the back can ease muscle growing pains.
Choose The Right Products
Winter is the perfect time to ditch your light body washes and moisturizers because they can’t keep up with the harsh effects of the cold weather. This means that you need to choose the perfect products for the winter season. Moisturizing bath and lotions would be highly recommended especially for babies with dermatitis prone skin. Hypoallergenic and fragrance-free products are best for babies of all skin types. Also, do not forget to moisturize the face since cheeks are one of the first places to dry.
Take Cover
There’s nothing wrong with bundling little babies up but it’s also very important not to overdo the sweaters and mittens unless you are out on the cold. Do not forget to snuggle up with your baby as their bodies heat up very fast and they tend to lose a lot of energy preserving their body heat. It’s also a good idea to let babies and children wear socks inside the house just make sure that these socks have slip-proof padding under the soles.
Hydrate The Air
Just as you need to hydrate your skin, hydrating the air is also a very good idea. You can use a humidifier to do this especially if you are using a heater. Heat can dry up the air so installing a humidifier would be a perfect match. If you do not want to invest in a humidifier, you can use a steamer to add up moisture inside your house.
Hydrate From The Inside
Having an extra glass of water is not only for summer, but it’s also best for winter! You can hydrate your baby with coconut water, juices or warm soups and fruits like oranges and lemons.
Don’t Forget The Lips
Dry cool air can make your babies lips dry and chap easily. Severe chapping of the lips can cause cracks and bleedings so keep your baby’s lips soft and moisturized using a dab of coconut oil.
