What Not To Give To 2-Year Olds And Below

One the most exciting time is when your baby starts eating solid foods at 6 months. While we are very careful with what to give, it can be really tempting to let them taste what you are munching. 

Here are foods you need to avoid feeding your baby from 2 years old and below

1. Salt

Salt intake for kids should be carefully given. For 1-year old below, do not add salt to whatsoever food. Since their kids are still developing, they are not ready to process it yet.  Try baby-friendly herbs and spices like cinnamon, ginger, rosemary, and parsley as per recommendation by nutrition coach Renee Rose Rodrigo. 

2. Sugar

According to the American Hearts Society (AHS), children below 2 years old do not need added sugar in their diet. “Taste preferences begin early in life, so limiting added sugars may help children develop a lifelong preference for healthier foods,” says AHS. Children this age can’t have sugary drinks or pre-packaged sweets. 

3. Honey

Not just the sugar, honey is also not advisable for young babies according to the U K. National Health Service (NHS). Honey can contain bacteria like Clostridium botulinum which can produce toxins leading to infant botulism-causing constipation, poor appetite, lethargy, even pneumonia, and dehydration. 

4. Popcorn

Popcorn, whole grapes, and jelly snacks: Any food that is sticky, slippery, hard, chunky and round are all choking hazards to babies.  Raisins, marshmallows, walnuts and berries, whole hot dogs, candy, chips, and white bread can stick together as advised by KidsHealth. Only feed your babies food that you can mush, can be gummed like a ripe banana, and picked or sliced apart.

5. Raw And Undercooked Food

You may like your sunny side up runny but your little ones shouldn’t be. According to the Food and Drug Administration,  both the yolk and egg white should be firm. High temperatures kill harmful bacteria, so meat should be cooked at 62 degrees Celsius, ground meat at 71 degrees, and poultry 74 degrees Celsius. Fish should be given once your baby is around 4 to 6 months old but cook it until the flesh becomes opaque and meat can easily be flaked with a fork.
